Guidelines for Building Your Commercial Greenhouse

Productivity and efficiency of operating a greenhouse mainly depends on the type of growing material used. Separate types of greenhouses, generally stand alone with each other. However, they can join to get access through the corridor to other greenhouses.

Quonset is a separate type of greenhouse most commonly used in commercial production. These types are built using curved rafter which usually has a solid wall tip to add support. Quonset greenhouse types are suitable for most plant varieties but their growth capacity is to some extent limited to the "sidewall" which reduces productivity and efficiency.

The ridge greenhouse joins through eave with a joint ditch. Usually, there are no interior walls that are located under the gutter that allow for increased productivity.

Ridge greenhouses can be curved or pointed arches. Surfing greenhouses are generally suitable for large covers such as fiberglass or glass, while curved arched greenhouses are usually covered with much lighter materials such as polycarbonate or polyethylene. Many connected ridge greenhouses are often called "ranges".

Planning
This is one very important step that must be considered carefully by planters. Selection of the right area with connections to labor, markets, utilities and future expansion really makes a lot of difference in how businesses will profit and grow.

The following are the basic things to consider:
  • Plants that you will plant (potted plants, plants, bedding, perennials, herbs, vegetables, etc.)
  • Plant growth period (seasonal or year-round)
  • Plants to be planted (flats, pots, hydroponic beds, tubs, etc.)
  • Planting media (no soil, soil, mixture, compost, nutrient solution, etc.)
  • Growing method (floor, movable or fixed bench, growing bag, bed and flood)
  • Annual productivity (space needed)
  • Marketing techniques (retail, wholesale or both)
  • Investment or capital

The following are things to consider when building a commercial greenhouse:

1. Space.
The area needed is very dependent on the type of your business both retail and wholesale. Minimum space must be approximately two hectares so as to provide parking for employees and customers, access roads for shipping, storage areas, and also for future expansion. Wholesale businesses will generally need more because the greenhouses will be more bibber and wider.

2. Zoning.
This is a local regulation that controls land use and encourages the safety, health and welfare of the community. Note that greenhouse operations are permitted only in certain zones.

The front, the distance of the side yard, signs and parking spaces must be determined. You must confirm with your zoning officer and ask what is needed and ask about the building code so that you will know whether permission will be needed.

3. Access the Highway.
The location of the site in connection with the highway must be taken into account. For retail businesses, locations on the side or along high-traffic roads or alongside large residential sites can greatly improve business. Wholesale businesses need access to highways between countries so as to handle heavy truck road traffic.

4. Environment.
Choose a location that is far from "industrial pollution".

5. Climate.
Avoid areas with extreme temperatures, because in winter plant growth is directly related to the light received.

6. Slope.
The slope of the land to provide water drainage is very important. Greenhouses must be located at the base of the gravel, 6-12 inches above the ground.

7. Water.
Plants need adequate water supply for optimal development and the highest production of flowers. Regarding how much water is needed will be largely determined by how large the area will be watered, weather conditions, plants planted, time of year and "environmental control system".

Note that water from "natural sources" has a certain amount of impurities, and is sometimes harmful to plant growth. You must test the water for chemicals that can be present in your water system, to overcome the problem, if there are problems.

8. Electricity.
Your commercial greenhouse must have sufficient electricity supply and a distribution system must be provided so as to supply and manage the environment in the greenhouse. As early as at the greenhouse design stage, you must have already called your local electric utility regarding power availability and also called your electrician to design the electric layout.

9. Expansion.
In all stages of development and planning, provisions must be considered for later expansion.

Note that before entering business, like in any business, careful assessment must be made before a decision is made. Plan carefully. Good luck.
