Graphic design is rooted in the rich cultural history of all arts. Art has been a part of culture since before the written word. The history of Graphic Design dates back to this ancient beginning. The history of graphic design, in a sense, the history of art and its applications and methods, and the history of the techniques and technology of graphic design reproduction.
Like all recreational and applied arts, graphic design began with the invention of printing machines. Previously in the history of graphic design, art and other creative works must be copied hands. The ability to print copies of works of art and other creative works is a big step towards graphic design that exists today.
Another big step in the history of graphic design is the development of photography, and later filmmaking. These important steps at the end of the 19th century were a stepping stone to creating the graphic design that we have today. This era also marks the beginning of the separation of creative arts, or art for entertainment, from applied art, or art used for purposes such as delivering messages, advertisements, and other graphic design purposes.
The next biggest step in the history of graphic design is computer development, and more importantly, the wave of technology that leads to personal computers in every home like we have today. Graphic design will not be as popular as that, it is also not as effective, creative, and can be reproduced without the invention of computers. Therefore, the history of graphic design is closely linked to the history of computers, computer software, computer imaging software, computer scanners, computer printers, and digital photography. Internet and graphic design software are perhaps the most important of these technological advancements which have played a major role in the history of graphic design. Without all this important technological progress, graphic design will not be what it is today.
There are many other important landmarks in the history of graphic design. In 1919 the first arts and industry union was put into effect. In 1929, commercial artists, advertising designers, and illustrators became a common place. In 1970 mega computers allowed for more progress in graphic design with companies like IBM. The development of micro processors, which enabled office computers and home computers, came in 1980 and was marketed with Apple computers in 1984. Finally, the now common internet access technology became the culmination of a history of graphic design that has led to the graphic design industry we know and recognize at this time.
